British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.
The facility, identified by surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.
UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey said. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."
In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
