The buzz about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team could be crafting a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is precisely these elements that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
